Get paid to help us create The Playing Audience’s Guide

We’re really excited to announce The Playing Audience’s Guide – a new research project in collaboration with Coney Associate and Researcher at Bath Spa University, Dr Astrid Breel. This is an innovative study exploring expectations and experiences of immersive and participatory theatre and performance, aiming to support clearer communication between audiences and makers of immersive and participatory work.

Whether you’re a maker, a keen audience member, or someone who’s always been a bit hesitant about interactive work, there are several ways you can get involved – with the chance to earn up to £85 in thankyou vouchers for taking part.

You don’t need to have any experience of taking part in research or performance – in fact we’re especially keen to hear from people outside the arts and those who may be more reluctant to get involved in interactive work. If that’s you, read on! We’d also be over the moon if you could share this post with anyone you know who fits the bill but might not know Coney yet.

What’s involved

We’re looking for reluctant and keen participants, to join two separate audience groups:

  • The reluctant participant group will take part in a 1-hour Focus Group session
  • The keen participant group will take part in 2x 1-hour Focus Group sessions, and be asked to take part in 3 case study performances and share some insight into their experience afterwards (as part of this you get to see a broad range of high quality interactive work for free!)

The focus groups will be run over Zoom and post-show audience responses will be collected digitally; all events will take place between 15 November and 14 December.

You’ll receive thank you vouchers of your choice for your participation (£20 for reluctant participants and up to £85 for keen participants). The show tickets will be provided free of charge, but you’ll need to be able to travel to the case study performances, which will all be in central London (if the cost of travel is a barrier to you taking part then please let us know and we can provide support).

How to take part

If you’re interested, please complete this short form as soon as possible. Places are limited so we’ll be back in touch shortly to let you know if you have a place. If you’d like to have a chat about the project before signing up then please email Astrid on, or for questions about Coney’s involvement, give us a knock.

You can also get involved as an industry partner by answering a brief survey to contribute to our research (and hear our outcomes in return). Find the survey here, and email Astrid on if you’d like to take part in a workshop sharing at the end of the project.

P.S. If you’ve already registered as a reluctant participant via our mailing list, but haven’t heard from us yet, please drop us an email to say hi – we’ve been unable to contact a couple of respondents due to admin gremlins and we’d love to get back in touch with you!
