Spark a little magic

The Magic Trick was a gentle yet impactful piece of play and reflection that might help magic a small positive change into your life, or at least have fun trying.

About the project

The Magic Trick was an invitation to spark change – through play, through connection, and perhaps, through a little magic. Gently interactive, it offered opportunities to connect with others in play – but players could always choose how, or if, they participated. Observers were welcome too.

Before the experience began, each player received a mysterious parcel in the post, along with an invitation to join the Coney Zoom Bar. From there, they were whisked away to meet a renowned magician. We never quite knew what their trick would be – but sometimes, a rabbit was pulled from a hat.

In the days that followed, players continued the journey via email and SMS, exchanging up to five messages in support of whatever change they were choosing to magic. But how – and whether – to play was always up to the player.

At its heart, the piece explored the possibility of sparking change through play. Together, we built something joyful – a moment of collective wonder, connection, and hope. And with a little luck, or a little magic, that spirit could ripple into the rest of life.

“The Magic Trick made my evening (…) A lovely warm bath of a show. Coney’s shared imagined spaces have been the best places to hang out during this pandemic.”

“It was a playful way to examine this strange and worrisome time we live in. It made me stop and think about myself and the world, but above all else, it gave me a good mood that I carried with me throughout the day. “
